Norman Roberts, a descendant of Hugh and Mary Owens Roberts, is standing at the entrance to the poorhouse in Llanrwst where the entire Roberts family had to go because of religious persecution. Hugh's shoemaking business suffered greatly after his conversion to Mormonism because the locals refused to do business with a Mormon. But he made such a nuissance of himself by preaching Mormonism in the poorhouse that the officers of the place moved him and his family back to his old home and assisted him with means to work at his trade as shoemaker. The picture was taken in 1938 while Norman Roberts was serving a mission in Wales. The building no longer stands.

Some time after the poorhouse experience Hugh Roberts and a traveling elder were taken by some of the townspeople to a bridge in Eglwysbach where they were about to hang the two for preaching heresy. Hugh's daughter, Catherine, shouted at them and shamed them into releasing her father and the traveling elder. Hugh remained faithful to his new religion from the time of his conversion in 1847 to his death in 1892. Mary converted in 1849 and also remained faithful to her death in 1894. They were unable to leave Wales to emigrate to American until 1864; thus, the townspeople had to put up with this Mormon family for seventeen years.
