Sunday next, July 20 1862. I
intended going to Neath to day but I see that it is
impossible for it rains in torrents. Conciquentley I
was ablidged to stay at Morriston.
Friday 18th After breakfast I went to Mynachdy and called by the house of an old friend that I
had not seen for years. He was a school master by the name of Hugh Williams. He
said that he did not know me. I hardly knew him at first. We had a glass of
beer together. Then I went to Bro Benjamin Jones’s house and had some
[p. 15]

Morning breaks the shadows flee, then prayer was
offered by myself.
[p. 16]
Then President Jeremy Adressed the
meeting. He exhorted the Brethren to faithfulness. Bro Bigler
followed him. He said that he felt a verry good
influence in the meeting. He said many good things after singing prayer was
offered by Bro Jeremy. After meeting I went to Bro Jeremy’s house to dinner. There

Evans from Cyfyng. We asembled again in the hall at 1 ½ in the afternoon.

time from Llanelly.
After singing, prayer by bro David M. Davies Bro Davies also
Addressed the mee President
Bigler said that he would speak a short time and his
subject should be the gospel. He shewed the folley of people being frightened Into
religion by having hell & the bottomless pit preached unto them. He said
many other good things that I cannot write. Bro Davies adressed
the meeting next in Welsh and he was followed by Bro Jeremy. Bro Jeremy spoke
some very good things. He spoke upon Emigration.
[p. 18]
He counseiled
the brethren and sisters to try to save money to go to Zion. He said that those who used two
ounces of tobacco per week could do on less. In short he said that a great deal
of the money that might to be saved for emigrating was spent for useless things.
President Bigler said a few words at the close of the
meeting. He counseled the young Brethren and sisters not to get married in
these lands but to strive with all their power to get means to deliver
themselves [out] of old Babylon
[p. 19]
to the land of Zion.

[p. 20]
came from the same place as I did
in North Wales. Hugh Ellis had just returned
from a vissit there and he had brought his sister
Anne back along with him. Poor Anne was verry low
hearted. She was home sick, this being the first time for her to leave home. I
was now made aquainted with all the proceedings at Machynlleth. They also told how my Father Mother sister and Grandmother were getting on. At a ¼ to 8 in the

Lake Valley for seed.
I went up with them to Bro Jeremy’s house to have some dinner. Soon after
dinner I took leave and went down to the sea shore. There I met a man in a
machine going to bathe in the sea. I asked if he had any objections for me to
strip in the same machine as him. He answered no sir not at
all. So I went in and had a good bathe. The water felt very fine this
evening. After I came out and dressed myself I gave the owner of the machine
[p. 23]

I vissited a bro
this morning that had not attended the meetings from more than a year. I
talked to him kindley and shewed
him his folly for being so careless about the work of the Lord. I tried to

Jones to anoint her with concricrated oil
[p. 29]
which he did. Afterwards we both
laid hands on her (I being mouth) and rebuked him in the name of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth. And we prayed to the Father in his name and our prayer was

myself and sister Bowden & the children. Also sister Margaret Thomas and
her child, and sisters Anne Davis and Elizabeth Thomas.)
But by comming home we were overtook by the rain and

Sunday 17 this morning I went to Briton Ferry in company
with bros David E. Jones and Wm Jenkins. Bro Jenkin
Williams also met us by the Railway Station. Our object in going there was to
preach the Gospel so we stood upon a pile of wood after singing and prayer.
Elder D.E. Jones preached. He was followed by Elder Wm Jenkins. Afterwards I
made a few remarks. I will here remark that since the brethren began to occupy
the aforesaid pile of wood for a stand to preach the principles of the gospel
upon some of the Sectarian ministers of the place fearing like the silver smith
of old that their craft was in
[p. 38]
Danger came there every Saturday evening and preached Some
blind doctrine or other and they did not forget to use their influence against
us Counselling the people not to listen to us &c.
They had also said that the gifts of the gospel such as speaking in tongues,
prophesying, &c., had been done away with and no longer needed. So I in my
remarks brought these things before them and the gospel that Jesus, Peter, and
Paul preached in the fullness of its glory and blessings. I also taught them
the gospel of Jesus Christ was an unchangeable one and that if an Angel from heaven, leave alone
[p. 39]
Sectarian Ministers, was to preach any other gospel they should
be accursed. According to Paul’s testimony we tried to enlighten the people in
our humble way. I believe that those ministers will do more good than harm, for
the honest seeker after truth will soon discover the difference between the
unreasonable confusion they are advocating And the pure consistent principles
of the gospel as they flow from the lips of God’s inspired servants who are
clothed with the holy priesthood. And may God bless them is my desire that they
may soon be numbered among the covenant people of the Lord. After the close
[p. 40]
of our meeting I and bro. D. E.
Jones went back to To [sic] bro Benjm
Jones’s house and had some dinner. Afterwards we went to Aberdylais

[p. 41]
at bro William Jenkins house.

on of hands to two persons
[p. 42 – Some pages are missing that would contain entries
from Thursday, 21 August 1862, to Monday, 15 September 1862.]
a prayer meeting there this evening.
Tuesday 16 at Swansea.
I slept at bro Jeremy’s house tonight. Wednesday 17, I stayed at Swansea this evening. I
attended a Saints meeting at our hall.* President Jeremy and myself adressed the Saints. President Jeremy spoke upon the
responsibility that rested upon parents to teach their children the principles
of the Gospel. Thursday 18 this evening I went to Morriston.
We held a Saints meeting there tonight at Hopkin
Jones’s house. Bro Jones, Henry and myself [*Wednesday 17th a child
was blessed in this meeting named Lydia Unger & sister
[p. 43]
Agnes Cutliff was also cut of the
Church.] addressed the Saints. Friday
19 at Morriston. This morning I wrote the
following letter to my Grandmother who lived with my Father and mother in North Wales. Her name is Ann Oliver. “Morriston,
September 19th 1862. Dear Grandmother. As I have a few moments to
spare this morning I feel to improve them in answering your kind letter. I can
say that I feel sorry at the conduct of my parents in not answering my letters.
I am glad to learn that you are all
[p. 44]
alive. I feel in good health and
spirits. Thank the Lord for it. Last week I vissited
the far famed town of Neath and I saw a fish that was
exhibited there called the Sea Lion, that was recently caught somewhere near Africa so they said. The sight was worth witnessing. It
looked a verry ferocious animal. Such a frightful looking
thing I never saw before. They will attack men. You have I dare say heard talk
of Neath Abby (I passed by it the other day) that magnificent Edifiece which is like all the rest of the works of mortal
man daily approximating nearerer
[p. 45]
to its native elements of
decomposition. While contemplating upon that once extraordinary exhibition of
human skill it brings forcibly to my mind to great temple at Jerusalem of which our Saviour
said that one stone should not be left upon another, but what should
be thrown down. But how contrary was that to the feeling of the Jews. They
would not beleive it. So it is with this generation.
Although the Lord desires to gather them as a hen gathereth
her chickings before the vials of his wrath
[p. 46]
are poured without measure upon the
courupt nations of the earth. They will not harken. Many years ago when all was peace and prosperity in
the land of America the Lord sent a mighty prophet to warn them of the great judgements that were comming upon
them because of their iniquities and at the same time offering them the
everlasting Gospel, which had they received, would have saved them from the
direful calmnity that has come upon them. But instead
of harkning to God’s servants they prosecuted them,
cast them
[p. 47]
into prison and stained their hands
by sheding the blood of the noblest spirits that were
ever clothed in human flesh. And by their wickedness they have drawn the
indignation of the Allmighty upon their heads and so shure as the maelstrom has bursted
upon America
so shure will it go fourth upon every nation. Untill the 24 chapter of Isiah be
fulfilled and man be made more scarce than gold. The world may say what it
likes about its self but the only thing thing [sic]
that keeps the indignation of the Almighty from falling upon this and other
[p. 48]
nations at present is because a few
of the honest in heart are yet to obey the gospel and be gathered into the ark
of Latter days (as it was in the days of Noah). Then will the Lord humble the
mighty ones of the earth the oppressors of his people. Then will the day of
mourning and the day of lamentation come. And it shall come to pass that whomsoever will not take up his sword against his neighbour must needs flee to Zion. For in mount Zion
and in Jerusalem
only shall be deliverance as the Lord has said. Joseph
[p. 49]
Smith and his fellow servants has
told the inhabitance of America
many years ago, although they despised and presecuted
them, that the day would come when hundreds of them would flee to the Latter
day Saints for refuge. The Lord said through his ancient prophets that he would
cause them that oppress Zion
to come bending to her. That day is neigh, the hand of the Lord is upon the
nations and they shall be smitten as a potters vessel
while that little stone spoken of by Daniel will roll fourth and become
[p. 50]
a great mountain and ultimatley fill the whole earth. Then the Zion
of our God will arise and shine in splendour and this
fair creation will become the home of the Reedemed
sons and daughters of God who are to be the Kings and Queens
of Eternity. And they will for ever bask in the bright sunbeams of Eternal joy
and hapyness. Dear Grandmother, the Kingdom of God
is upon the earth and thousands are flockin to that
great gathering place of the Latter days spoken
[p. 51]
of by the holy prophets. If you
have a desire to be saved, and be prepared to enjoy the society of those that
have passed from this earth, to be exalted in the eternities of God, Beleive in the gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints
and be baptized for the remission of your sins and by the Elders of this
church laying their hands upon your head to bless you, who holds the keys of
the eternal priesthood of God. You shall receive the gift of the holy ghost. You shall have a knowledge
for your self that you are acceptable before God.
[p. 52]
I have received those blessings, and I know that the Lord
has again restored the gospel in the fullness of its gifts and blessings and
that they can be enjoyed
as ancientley, by all those who will
humble themselves to obey this gospel which is the power of God unto salvation.
Trusting that these few Remarks will excite your serious contemplation I remain
with kind rememberance. Yours Affectionatley, Francis D. Hughes. N.B. Please write back soon. FDH
[p. 53]
I have wrote many letters besides
the foregoing to my Father’s house and have testifyed
to them many times of the gospel of Jesus Christ but I have entirely failed to
get any of my relatives to embrace the gospel so far. Saturday 20th
I went to Pyle. Sunday 21 at Pyle. I attended a
Sacrament meeting here at 2 pm. Bros John Jones and Thomas Butter from St. Brides
were here. I attended another preaching meeting at ½ past six. Monday 22 at Pyle. I was out this morning with
[p. 54]
bro David Morgans
picking black berries. In the evening I attended a prayer meeting at bro Thomas
Thomas’s house and it was a verry good meeting. I
felt much of the Spirit of the Lord there and so did others. Tuesday 23 At Pyle. I received a letter this morning from president Jeremy Informing me that he intended coming here
tomorrow after breakfast. I and bro David Morgans
went to a field to dig some potatoes for sister Bowden. We also gathered a
little tin full of blackberries. Wednesday 24
[p. 55]
This morning the rain was pouring. After dinner I and bro
David Morgans borrowed two umbrellas and we went to
the Railway Station to meet bro Jeremy. About ½ past 7 p.m. we held a Saints
meeting at bro Bowden’s house. After singing and prayer president Jeremy spoke
for a length of time upon the absolute nesessity of
paying tithing &c in order to obtain an inheritance in the Celestial Kingdom. A good feeling prevailed. After
singing the meeting was closed through prayer by myself.
Thursday 25 This morning I and bro Jeremy
[p. 56]
had some breakfast at David
Harris’s house. Afterwards we called at bro Thomas Thomas
house. Sister Elizabeth Thomas accompynied
us from there to the railway station. I and bro Jeremy went by train to Portalbot. We called at sister Hannah Lewis’s house. We went
from there to sister Mary Anne Hodson’s
house, and had some dinner there. After dinner sister Elizabeth Lewis sent me a
nice neck Tie by a little girl. At 3 o’clock pm I went to Neath
by train. Bro Jeremy proceeded to Swansea.
At ½ past 7 pm I attended a saints [meeting]
[p. 57]
at Neath. I and bro Benjamin Jones
exhorted the saints to be faithfull and to keep all
the counsels that they had through the priesthood from time to time. I endevoured in my humble way to shew them the necessity of contributing of their means
towards the rooling on of God’s Kingdom upon the
earth and also of striving to save as much as they could of their money towards
delivering themselves from these lands to Zion.
I spoke about two different faiths: this, the right faith, and the wrong faith
There are a few persons in this church
[p. 58]
that are quite thoughtless about
almost everything. They will not pay their tithing nor contribute any thing
towards the upbuilding of God’s Kingdom neither will
they try to lay a single penny aside towards Emigrating themselves. And at the
same time they have got faith that God’s Kingdom will be built up and that
temples will be raised that they may receive their endowments therein, And that
the Lord will gather them from Babylon.
In short that the Lord will do everything himself while they
are doing nothing. Such persons will surely be greatly dissapointed
[p. 59]
for they have got the wrong faith.
On the other hand Those that will harken to the
counsels of the priesthood, pay their tithing if they can, and if too poor to
pay the tenth part of their income, do what they can to assist the work of the
Lord, will be blessed with a portion of the Spirit of the work they are engaged
in, which spirit will enlighten them and shew them
the right principle that leads to exaltation. That class generally has a little
money in the Individual Emigration Fund. They do not feel that God is going to do for them
what they can do themselves but they beleive that the Lord will assist all those that
[p. 60]
Tryes to assist themselves. Conciquentley
they will not be dissapointed. For they have got the
right faith, A faith accompynied
by works. Friday 26th I spent the most part of this morning at bro Benjn Jones’s house. In the evening I went to Alltwen. I called at bro James Davies’s house and had some
food there. I went to bro David Morgans’s
