John was ordained an elder 24 May 1852, and for the next eleven years worked as traveling elder, clerk and counselor, and then as president of the Pembroke Conference. While sailing from Liverpool to New York City with his wife and five sons, John presided over one of the six wards on shipboard. He and his family journeyed to Salt Lake City,Utah in the Thomas Ricks company. Soon after arriving, they left for Willard, Box Elder County, Utah. While there, he served as ward teacher; then he presided over the teachers' quorum. He was a member of the School of the Prophets in Brigham City, and just before moving to East Portage, Box Elder County, he served as Sunday School Superintendent. In early 1884 President Wilford Woodruff, then president of the Twelve Apostles, and Apostle Lorenzo Snow ordained John Duggan Gibbs as a Patriarch.
