Ellen Obray, daughter of George Obray and Mary Elizabeth Edwards was born 24 August 1854 in Glamorganshire, Wales. She emigrated with her parents in 1869 on board the ship Medway, arriving in Quebec the 14th of August. Her mother died on the journey to Utah.

Ellen, her sister Mary Jane, and father George reached Salt Lake City in 1872. There she met and married James Bishop. James was born 24 July 1831 at Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.

Ellen and James lived in Salt Lake City where James worked as a plumber. They had four children: George, Katie, Benjamin, and Joseph. Ellen died suddenly on 23 July 1900. James died on 4 Jan 1908. Both are buried at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
