The 1881 British Census shows Ann Thomas, widow, living at 18 Pontycapel Road in Cefn Coed y Cymer with four of her children. (Mary was working elsewhere as a household servant.) She is said to have kept a boarding house which may also have served as a "mission home" for the Elders serving in the area. Ann emigrated with her three youngest children, Edward, John, and Elizabeth. The two oldest daughters had married. Mary and her husband, John Morris, stayed in Wales. Margaret and her husband, William Lewis Parry, emigrated in 1889.

Ann, Edward, John, and Elizabeth traveled by train to Salt Lake City and arrived there 11 July 1888. After a short time in Salt Lake City, they travelled on to Kamas, Summit County, where they made their home. Ann died in 1927 and is buried in Salt Lake City.
