Rebecca Bassett was a very young girl in Wales when she met Henry Hughes, the older missionary. Her parents and sister joined the church. Henry Hughes convinced the two teenage daughters to go to America with him at the conclusion of his mission. The parents were reluctant, but agreed when Henry promised not to marry the girls when he got home to Utah. He married Rebecca Bassett within months of returning to his home and other wives. After the Manifesto of 1890, Rebecca and one of the other wives (of four total) established a home of their own without Henry. They became quite self-sufficient, though very poor. Only Rebecca had children, so there were two moms and five children. Henry did not visit much but occasionally brought a special gift for a child. These were amazing people who triumphed over all sorts of hardship and disappointment from Wales to Utah!
