Comments: John A. Lewis had
two brothers, Edmund and John. He was a Methodist minister, a rock mason and
dock builder, a merchant, and the owner of 12 lease properties. He and Ann
lived in Cardiff, Wales. He and his brother Edmund helped build the Cardiff docks. The first home of John and Ann was a French
cottage in Frenches Row in the northern part of the
city. They later moved to a home on Millicent Street. Ann died of consumption on 5 May 1849 in Wales, leaving John with four young children—Ann, Mary,
Fredrick (or Frederick), and William. Three other children—Fred, Amelia, and Prees (twin of William) died as infants or young children.
The family moved to a home on Humphrey Street. The family was taught by Captain Jones and Elder Henshaw. John served a mission to Wales from 1872 to 1874, and was president of the mission. Helped settle Brigham City. Helped furnish passage for 25 other
families to America. Was known to have the gift of
healing. He had a misunderstanding with Dan Jones that was resolved. Planted a peach orchard from peach pits. John was described
as a “tall dark complexioned man, straight as an arrow and firm as the rock of
ages. He was a kind, charitable and very religious man.”
