A Brief History of William Vaughan
Morris
After
eight years of marriage and three years after hearing the Gospel plan William
faced one of his gravest trails in his life. On 7
June 1851 his beloved Sarah Isabella passed
away at their home in Liverpool. Her death created a great
emptiness and sadness for William and his son.. At the
time of her death their son Williams Charles was about 7 years of age. William
Vaughn was grief stricken at her loss.
One
of the only things that William had going for him was his faith in the teachings
of the Church, knowing that once again he and his son could be with his beloved
Sarah. Life was not easy after her
passing and he was concerned about the care of his son. William mourned the
death of Sarah, but he knew that he needed to remarry to have help in rearing
his son.
William
was in his 31st year and needed the love and care of a companion.
After searching for a wife for several months Jane Sarah Cearn
caught his eye. She was a beautiful young women full
of life and dreams. William was attracted to her and they courted. Just before
her 20th birthday she and William were married 16 March 1852. Born on 9 June 1832 in Liverpool, England Jane attended the Mormon
branch there, having been baptized in November of 1848 at the age of 16. Jane
brought with her a bit of sunshine for William and his son, and they were
grateful for her love and care.
With
many of the Saints coming to the United States, William and Jane decided
to make their home in Zion. Arrangements were made for
passage on the Walber, a seaworthy ship, but on May
31st William asked for a deposit refund and made arrangements on the
Germanicus instead. William was 32, Jane was 25, and
William Charles was 9 years of age when the trip was made. The ship landed in New Orleans.
