As posted on FamilySearch
David R Gill
was born in Mountain Ash, Glamorganshire, South Wales, April 2, 1866, and came
to Salt Lake with his parents in 1878. He had
resided in Utah
ever since his arrival here and first became engaged in newspaper work on the
Juvenile Instructor. He married Ellenor Morrison on
October 6, 1888, in Odgen, Utah.
He was in newspaper work for more than 49 years
and was known as one of the most distinguished members of the profession in the
state.
Utah was admitted to the Union
on January 4, 1896, and Mr. Gill became associated with Senator Frank J. Cannon
(term 1896-1899) on the Ogden Standard. He remained with that newspaper for
more than 12 years and served as secretary to Senator Cannon while the latter
was in Washington D.C.
Mr. Gill was employed with The Salt Lake Triune
for a number of years. He had also at times been connected with the Telegram
and the Deseret News, serving with the latter publication for more than four
years.
Besides his accomplishments as a newspaper man,
Mr. Gill also was a skilled printer and was one of the first typewriters in the
state. Although he had no musical training, Mr. Gill was a talented musician,
and was but a young man when he refused an offer to join Phillip Sousa as a coronetist.
Mr. Gill made hundreds of friends during his
newspaper career through his kindly, affable disposition. His fund of
information on Salt Lake and Utah
history made him invaluable to a newspaper office.
He and Ellenor had
five sons, Earl M (1889-1913), David Richard Gill (1894-1963), Harry M Gill
(1896-1986), George M Gill (1899-1992), and Frank M Gill (1904-1971), and a
daughter, Ora E Gill (1891-1948).
