January 1863
Thursday January 1st.
Came from Cardiff to Bristol on board the steamer "Velindra". I left
Cardiff at 12 a.m. and arrived at Bristol at 2 p.m. I had some difficulty at
Bristol to find the residence of brother George Halliday the President of the
Bristol Conference. I did not have the correct address of him, but after a
little reflection I remembered, "Bread St." and I afterwards very
soon found brother Halliday. He treated me kindly at his house known as Bread
Street Chapel.
I met brother William Willies who is a Missionary from Zion in the Bristol
Conference.
Friday January 2nd.
At Bristol. I took a walk to Redland about three miles from Bristol or a least
three miles from the place where I stopped last night (No. 5 Philadelphia
Street.) I visited the Zoological Gardens in the evening and afterwards I
returned to Brother George Hewlett's's house where I slept last night.
Saturday January 3rd.
At Bristol.
President George Q. Cannon and brother William G. Mills came to Bristol this
evening in order to attend Conferences here to morrow.
I was very happy to meet President cannon, after a long absence of nine months
since I last saw him.
Sunday January 4th.
Attended Conference at the "Bread Street Chapel" Bristol; Present on
the stand President George Q. Cannon of the Quorum of the twelve Apostles,
William G. Mills, President of the Birmingham Conference, myself, George
Halliday, President of the Bristol Conference, William Willies, and Charles
Rheese, travailing elders. There were also a few native elders on the stand.
President George Q. Cannon, W. G. Mills addressed the congregation through the
day; and I added a few remarks in the forenoon meeting.
An anti mormon lecturer of the name William G./Parrot attended the fore, and
afternoon meetings at our Chapel; he is a great enemy to the saints. He
pretended to take minutes in the meetings of what was said by the brethren that
addressed the congregation. He appeared a poor miserable old appostate, filled
with the spirit of the devil.
Monday January 5th.
I attended a tea party with the saints at "Bread Street Chapel." I
enjoyed myself very much through the evening to hear pieces recited and
different songs, all of which were quite interesting.
The mob on the outside of the building occasionally made an awful noise, and
beating the window shutters etc. While it was stormy without, we had peace
within. Brother William G. Mills and myself took tea on the Stand; Sister
Watkins, and Mrs. Moody waited on us.
After the party was over I went to my lodgings with brother George Hewlett. No.
5 Philadelphia Street.
Tuesday January 6th.
President George Q. Cannon, William G. Mills & myself left Bristol this
morning at half 7 and we arrived in Cardiff at 10 a.m. We held a meeting at our
hall in Cardiff in the evening, where President Cannon addressed the
congregation with much of the power of the holy Spirit resting on him; he
alluded to William O. Owen who has lately been excommunicated for dishonesty,
corrupt, and unchristian like conduct. Brother w. g. Mills followed brother
cannon bearing his testimony of the truth of the holy gospel. The saints were
highly pleased by the remarks made by the brethren. Brother Cannon and myself
stopped over night at brother Samuel Evans' house, and brother Mills and Joseph
W. Morgan stopped over night in the house next door to Samuel Evans' house.
Wednesday January 7th.
President Cannon and Mills left Cardiff this morning; bro. Cannon was going to
Liverpool and brother Mills was going to Birmingham.
Thursday January 8th.
I stopped at Brother Samuel Evans' house over night. About 11 a.m. the Omni
buss was driven close to brother Samuel Evans' door, and I was happily
surprised with the unexpected visit of Elders Chauncy W. West and Brigham Young
Junr. They came from Bristol this morning and they are in excellent health and
spirits. They intend to visit several of the Welsh conferences before they
return to england. Their visit I am confident will prose a blessing to all the
saints in the Principality.

females working so hard, cutting stones of lime about the Furnaces; and
wheeling coal and Iron ore to the large furnaces. We returned about half past 2
p.m. to the Conference house. I commenced wiring a letter to my wife this
evening in answer to the one I received from her on the 6th. instant.

imparting unto them a most valuable instructions and counsels. Elder West spoke
an hour and five minutes, and Elder Young about twenty two minutes. After the
brethren were through with their remarks, I arose and translated in substance
their remarks. The welsh portion of the congregation seemed to be highly
pleased that they also understood by the means of translating what has been
said by our worthy brethren.
The Welsh saints are highly favored of late; by frequent visits of brethren

the Boot Hotel, Aberdare, and brother Bywater and myself stopped at brother
Jonah Evans.

he had excellent freedom in addressing the congregation., I addressed the

I closed the meeting by prayer, and afterwards brother West and myself came to
our lodgings (The Stag's Head) and there over night.
I received a letter from brother John S. Davies from G. S. Lake City informing
me of the hostilites of Governor Harding against the saints. He stated in his
Message to the Legislature in Utah last December, that he intended to put down
polygamy if it needs be by the force of arms. Governor Harding will find out
before he will put down polygamy that it will be rather a hard piece of crust
for him to bite, and insted of putting a stop to polygamy, he will expose his
own folly; and shame and disgrace shall come upon his own head.

sister that we confirmed is Elizabeth Purser; her husband has lately left her;
and has treated her very bad; according to her statements. She declared to me
that she will never live with her husband any more; and that she intends to go
to service and try to save enough of money to emigrate as soon as she can to
Utah. After the evening meeting Elder George Gibbs baptized a young woman of
the name of Elizabeth Cousins a very promising young sister; Brother West,
myself and John Gibbs, President of the Conference confirmed her after she was

could trust to preside over that Conference.
