A BRIEF HISTORY OF
MARGARET GWYNNE LEWIS, WIFE OF DAVID LEWIS
The following descriptive paragraph was taken from the family record book of
Mrs. Margaret Gwynne Lewis of Bountiful, Utah:
This is to certify that Margaret Gwynne aged 23
years on the 18th February, 1844, born at Penndarren,
Methyr Tydvil, Glammorganshire, South Wales, was
baptized July 14, 1883, by Elder Benjamin Alien and
confirmed a member in the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, Methyr Tydvil Branch, Welsh Conference,
July 15th, 1883, by Elder George D. Adams.
John G. Gold, Secretary,
Dated March 30th, 1884.
Margaret Gwynne Lewis was born at Penndarren, Merthyr Tydfil, Glammorganshire,
South Wales, on February 18, 1861. She was the daughter, the sixth child, of
William Gwynne and Sarah Morgan. They were the parents of twelve children.
Margaret Gwynne and her mother and youngest sister Mary Ida Gwynne joined the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wales and were baptized there.
Soon thereafter, they left Wales and came to the United States and to Utah. A
short while after reaching Utah, Margaret Gwynne was married to David Lewis of
Bountiful. Mr. Lewis had been an early convert to the Church, having left
Cardiff, South Wales, in 1856, he came to Bountiful, Utah, to make his home.
He had been married previously to Ann Lewis. She had died in 1867, and in 1871
he had married a widow, Harriet Wood. She also passed away a year or two
later. David Lewis was then called to go to South Wales on a mission for the
Mormon Church and, while there, he met Margaret Gwynne and other members of her
mother's family.
Margaret G. Lewis was the mother of six sons. Two of these sons died, one in
infancy and the other in early childhood. She was a devoted wife and mother.
She taught her children to be honorable and industrious boys. Her husband died
in February 1905, which left the care of the boys to her. Her home was then
located at about 6th South and 5th West in Bountiful. As her husband had been
a farmer, they had lived at the place where his farm was located. The boys
were too small at his death to take care of the farm so Mrs. Lewis rented the
house and farm and moved her family to the home that her mother had built at
2nd South and 1st West. Her mother and sister had died previously.
Margaret Lewis was called to serve as a Relief Society visiting teacher, and
she worked in this capacity for a number of years. Later she was appointed to
be a counselor in the Relief Society presidency of the Bountiful Second Ward,
with Emma T. Riley and Ella Williams. She loved the Mormon Church and was a
faithful member. Mrs. Lewis passed away in January 1926.
