Word was brought to the city late last night that William J. Evans, one of the
pioneers of the Deer lodge Valley and a pioneer of Montana, had died at his
ranch where he had resided for the past 48 years. The cause of death was not
stated, but he was 80 years of age and had been quite feeble for some time.
Undertaker C. A. Tuttle was notified and he left for the ranch, which is about
six miles from the city, about midnight to take care of the body. It is said
to be probable the body will be brought to the Tuttle parlors and kept until
the funeral takes places.
William J. Evans was born march 18, 1828 in South Wales. His father was a
stonemason and migrated to the United States in 1849. He settled first in
Iowa, later removed to Utah and then to California. After some years residence
in California he returned to Utah, where he died at a good old age. Throughout
the several moves the family was kept together.
Mr. Evans was educated at the public schools of his native country and remained
with his parents in all their wanderings until 1863, when he came to Bannock to
reside. Up to that time he had spent his life working on a farm and at Bannack
he engaged in freighting from Utah to that place and Virginia City. This he
continued to do for two years and then in 1865 he located in the Deer Lodge
Valley and settled on a ranch of 480 acres where his death occurred.
In Salt Lake he was married to Ann Morgan, a native of South Wales, who was
brought to this country by her mother wile a child. Mrs. Evans died Aug. 10,
1906 and was buried in the cemetery at Anaconda.
There are seven children: Mrs. David Jones, Melrose; Mrs. George Gregson,
Bozeman; E.I. Evans, French Gulch; Mrs. Emma Sines, Tacoma, WA; W.J. Evans
jr., David Evans and Miss Jeanette Evans.
All of the relatives will be notified by wire and it is said the funeral
arrangements will not be made until they are heard from.
