JOSHUA SALISBURY 1994 FAMILY REUNION PROGRAM
Under direction of: Darwin L. Salisbury
PREAMBLE
We the decendents of Joshua Salisbury honor and respect him for the great example that he was, as he accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ and lead his families in the true principles as proclaimed in the restoration in these latter days. We are grateful for all those who since that time have carried on the work of God, and glorified him through his only begotten son, Jesus the Christ. The world at large is in great need to follow his teachings and principles as did Joshua in his example for us. We are especially grateful for this land, and for each of you, decendents of Joshua Salisbury, that made the effort to gather here today to visit with one another and exchange family history information. Relate the history of Joshua:
JOSHUA SALISBURY HIGHLIGHTS
- Was born to Thomas Salisbury and Sarah Jones Salisbury on June 3, 1827 at Llanasa, Flintshire, North Wales, a land of hills rich with coal, lead and iron.
- As a young man, Joshua acquired the skills of coal mining and stone masonry. It is recorded that Joshua was six feet tall, weighed 185 pounds at age 18, and had the strength of two ordinary men. He loved athletics, and was always interested in world championship boxing. I recall his eldest son, Joseph H. Salisbury, my grandfather always had similar interests. He must have been very near the size of his father.
-
On June 1, 1850, Joshua married a lovely Welsh girl, Martha Davies.
-
They had a son, Ellis, born August 4, 1851, and a daughter Sarah, born May 14, 1854 in Wales.
-
Joshua's mother's brother, Joseph Jones baptized him into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Christmas day 1852 at age 25.
Two years later, Joshua became an elder and was active in spreading the gospel to friends and fellow workmen at the coal mine. Ridicule and persecution became so bitter that by 1855 he took his family to America, but got only as far as Illinois, when Martha died January 6, 1857 and was burried at St. John in Perry County. Joshua returned to Pennsylania to work in the coal mines, and married a young widow, Elizabeth Hoskin on October 13, 1858, she had been baptized only two months earlier, and had lost her first husband a about two years before. Joshua and Elizabeth established a home, then began to prepare for the trek across the plains. Joshua built them a sturdy wagon to be drawn by a pair of oxen. They apparently traveled as far as Bowlesville, Gallatan County, Illinois before July 21, 1859, as their daughter Caroline was born there. In April 1860 they they left for Winter Quarters at Florence, Nebraska, getting there in late May, then five weeks later started West with John Smith as Captain of their company, comprized of 359 people with 39 Wagons. Joshua had his two children, Elizabeth and her three children, and their baby Caroline. They arrived in Salt Lake City September 1, 1860. Following October General Conference, they settled in Wellsville.
