Diary 1854

In this book I, David Richards, record my work day by day.

                                                                                  1 September 1854

1      Friday) Worked until 3:00                 p.m. I spent the rest of the day going to W. lee Ware   [Witton le Wear] with Bro. Sm. Jones to visit the Saints there whom we saw in good feelings.

2      Saturday) Worked during the day. I spent the afternoon reading.

3      Sunday) In the morning distributed pamphlets around to the houses of this town. At  1:00 in the afternoon Bro. Wm Jones and I preached out of doors in this town and after that preached at 5:00 in the same place. Many together

in the two meetings. When I was up preaching in the last meeting the English Wesleyans came by our place, preaching and singing. I stopped speaking until they had gone by. Everyone observed their lack of courtesy and scorned them greatly.

4        Monday) I spent the morning reading and the afternoon resting. In the evening at work. Worked nights this week. I spent the hours before going to bed reading

and writing and doing some things which were necessary on the 5th, 6th, 7th and the 8th. (Bro. Wm Jones and I were in W. lee Ware and wrote a letter to Pres. F. D. Richards in Liverpool to get clarification concerning the Emigration

Fundabout which some things were not clear to us on Thursday the 7th).

9      Saturday) Rested in the morning. In the afternoon at Bishop Hauckland to get a Post Office order of 10 shillings to send to David Thomas in Llansawel [Briton Ferry] in Glamorganshire, Wales. In the evening in the council in W. lee

meeting to distribute the Lord's supper in this town. At 5:00 o'clock in the preaching meeting when Pres. Ths Smith preached in English and Bro. Wm Jones in Welsh. A very good audience in the two meetings and many together.

Jones about our decision to go forward and our feelings to do our best in this town. We received an answer today to the letter which we sent to Pres. F. D. Richards. The answer was interesting and understandable.

12       Tuesday) Worked during the day. In the evening I wrote a letter to the brethren in New Culkoo notifying them that Bro. Wm Jones and I would be there next Sunday. There are many Welshmen in that town and they are calling for

Welsh preaching there. Wm David Richards, my son, was taken very sick today. I administered the ordinance to him; a high temperature in his body which kept everything up; it continued like that through the night.

13    Wednesday) In the work throughout the day. In the evening in Witton lee Ware. Bro. Simison, the president of the Conference there; preached at the home of Bro. Jn Hudgson, Branch President. Th Smith was present and many of the Saints. It was appointed there that the branch would be called the Witton Branch instead of the Crook Branch, and that Bro. Cholera is very bad in this town at present; a great number are sick and many are dying.

good listening through the day and signs of baptizing                     there. We came back to the town in the evening. We found Bro. J. Evans had been very ill with the Cholera. He was much better. Others of the Saints there are in very

good health. The cholera is quite bad in the villages and towns of this country in general.
