John Hopla: Record Book

 

1.         John Hopla.  A record book.  Written in 1853.  Containing a little history of my life and labours in building up the kingdom of God while in Babylon.  Record of my d___

 

2.         [I] was born June 21, 1820, at Wallaston Cross in the parish of Pwllcrochan, Pembrokeshire, South Wales.  I was second son of John Hopla who was the second son of Stephen and Elizabeth Hopla.  My father was born at Grove in the parish of St. Michel, Pembroke, in the year 1789, August 18, South Wales.

 

3.         He was married to Elizabeth Bateman, first daughter of John and Ann Bateman.  My father died in year 1840 in the month of April on the 16th day of the month.  He was bearid in Pwllchrochan churchyard in the parish of Pwllchrochan.  My brother Philip was born at Fornigunnet in the parish of Roscrowther in the year 1818.  Died 184_?, Jan 10.  1853 Philip Raymond was born, May 15.  He died June 1853, aged 5 week.  He was my sister's son.  June 11, 1854, Joanna Edwards died.  She was my motherin-law.  She died at C_____ M_____ and was beauried at C________ Churchyard in the parish of C____

 

4.         I, John Hopla, was married to Catharine Edwards the third child of James and Joanna Edwards.  I was married in Pwllchrochan Church by the Rev. George Cartinel [?] November 1st 1846, South Wales, Europe.  My 2nd wife Harriet Green [I] married November 1, 1860, by Bishop Hickinglooper [?] at Salt Lake. [She] was the 13th child of Thomas and Margret Green.  Harriet Green born October 31, 1825, at Ripen Bonget Greet, Yorkshier, England.

 

5.         I, John Hopla, heard the gosple preach 3 times and then obayd to the same and I recived a strong testamony of the gosple that I knew it was the power of God restord to the earth.  I was 3 month baptize and I was then Ordaind to a priest by Elder John Morris, president of the Conference.  I boare testamony of the gosple restord for the first time in the house of John Beckshiear in Huntleton before a great num[ber] of people.  On the Sunday following I preach[ed] at Wallaston Cross with Elders Daniel Williams in the oppen air.  We had a large congregation.  We had a chair to stand on with my brother-in-law, William Raymond.

 

6.         We then returned hoame which was about 10 miles and preach[ed] at the house of William Davies, Monkton.  We preach[ed] at Wallaston Cross sevril times at 2 clock and at Angle at 6 and returnd hoam about 16 miles.  Daniel Williams use to lodge and vitle with us whenever he came that way and preach[ed] in sevrel places while a priest and gave food and lodging and mony to different Elders.  In October 19, 1850, I removd from Huntleton to Monkton to live on the the purpose to have a house to preach and hold Saints meeting in and a place for Elders to lodge.  John Price, president of Confrance and

 

7.         Daniel Williams, his Counseller, use to lodge with us and vitle for a long time.  I then was ordained to the office of a Elder October 11, 1850, under the hands of John Price, and to preside over the Pembroke Branch.  And I did preside over that branch untill August 1, 1851, and I did preach in different places at Pembroke Ferry, at Pater, at Monkton in the house of Paul Gray untill we was stopt theare by George Morgan and Isack Morgans, his father who had been cut of[f] for adultry.  I preach[ed] at Jameson June 1, 1851, in company with James Bridge for sevrel times.  October 10, 1851

 

8.         Then was appointed to preside over the councel in Pembroke November 23, 1851.  I then was apointed to preside over the branch at Lydstap the distance I had to travel from my house to the branch to go to it and to come hoam was 16 miles.  I traveld it near every Sunday and the Lord blesst me greatly and the branch for the branch were in a very low and weak state at the time I went theare.  I presided over that branch for 10 months.  During my presidency we opend a house on the ridgeway, the house of John Griffes, who receivd us kindlay.  I preach[ed] in Saint

 

9.         Flaurence in company with William Hire for sevrel times.  I preach[ed] in Manabear & Tenby and Penaly.  Baptize 8 in that district.  Ordained 2 Elder and 1 teacher, 1 priest in that time.  I then had to preside over the Pembroke Branch from Septem 5, 1852.  That first 3 months baptized 1.  I always attended to Saints meeting, preaching and counsel meetings.  I gave meat and lodgeing to the Elders when they came round to Counsel and Confrence and other times.  My wife use to wash their shirts and mend their stockings and do all that we could for them.

 

10.       We made many sacrifices for the work of the Lord and he blest us greatly for it.  We gave Daniel Williams and his wife lodgeing and food for a while when they was preparing for Emigrating.  I gave Daniel a white shirt, the only one I had, when he went away.  We assisted in giving food and lodgeing to the Elders every Genral Councel and Confrence and travling Elders at all times.  I attended to every confrence and councel as possable I could.  April 19 I was at Saints meeting at Lydstop 10 oçlock.  At 2:00

 

11.       I preacht at the Ridgeway; at 6 I preach[ed] at Tenby, had Saints meeting at 8 the same evingin [evening].  On the 18 at prayer [meeting] in Pembroke at 7 o-clock.  20th I was at Saints meeting Pembroke at 7 o-clock. 24th I was at Lawreny in Saint meeting at 10 o-clock and then traveld to Landship [?] and calld at the houses to look for a place to preach.  Sum of the people told us that we should not stand on their premises.  We got a house at Kenigar Hill [?] with Mrs Thomas.  Preached at Lawreny at 7 o-clock.  Traveld about 20 miles that day.  25th at prayer meeting in Pembroke.  27th at Sainints meeting in Pembroke.  30th attended generel councel.

 

12.       May 1, 1853.  Attended a prayer meeting in Pembroke at 10 o-clock.  At 2 o-clock I preacht in the east end in company with Elder James Bridge.  At 6 I preach[ed] in the chapel [at] Monkton.  I gave 5 shillings toward President Price's clothes.  I gave him also a ham of bacon.  One shilling toward a portrait of Brigam Young and twelve apostles.  Gave 2 shillings, [the] presidency owe 1 shilling sixpence to the pastor.  1 shilling Dr. Richards towards emigrating.  For fast 1 shilling sixpence track [?] and sixpence for books.  4 [shillings] to P. Cykes [Sykes].  Sixpence for a card.  1 shilling [for a] portrait.  May 2nd I attended prayer meeting and 4 Saints meetings.  On the 6th was in Councel.  On the 8th was in Saints meeting at 2 o-clock.  At 6 p.m. I preach[ed]

 

13.       in the Chapel.  9th in prayer meeting.  11th in Saints meeting.  15th I preacht in the east end at 2 o-clock.  At 3 in Saints meeting.  16th in prayer meeting.  17th I preach[ed] in the Green of Pembroke in company with Elder James Bridge.  Had a good meeting.  On the 19th I was in Saints meeting.  Sunday 22nd  I was in Confrence.  Monday 23rd I was in Councel.  Wensday 25th in Saints meeting.  Sunday 29th I was in prayer meeting in the morning.  At half past 2 I preach[ed] in Pataer in company with Elder David Williams.  I baptize Martha Jones May 24 and confirmd her on the 29th.  Monday 30th I was in prayer meeting.

 

14.       June 1 I was in Saints meeting.  Sunday 5th I was in prayer meeting at 10.  At half past 1 I preacht in the east end in company with J. Bridge.  At 6 in the chapel in Monkton.  Sunday 12th I was in prayer meeting at 10.  At 2:00 I went to the east end to preach in company with president John Price and no one came to hear.  We then returnd hoam to Saint meeting.  At 6 we preacht in the chapel.  Monday 13th I was in prayer meeting.  Saturday 18th I was in councel.  Sunday 19th I was in prayer meeting at 10.  At 2 I was in Saints meeting.  At 6 at preach[ing meeting].  Saturday 23rd I was in Councel.  Sunday 26th I was in prayer meeting

 

15.       at 10.  At 2:00 I was in Saints meeting.  At 6 I preacht in the chapel in company with Elder David Williams.  Monday 27th I was in prayer meeting.  Thursday 30th I was in Saints meeting.  Saturday I was in Councel.  Sunday I was in prayer meeting at 10 o-clock.  At 2:00 I preacht at Carew Cross Roads in company with Richard Jones.  At 6:00 we preach[ed] at Crysweell Kkey wheare we got greatly anoyd by George Evans and MarthaJohn telling the people not to belive our docktrine and that Joseph Smith was a fals prophet and he was killd for his abomination.

 

16.       Monday 4th in prayer meeting at 7:00.  Wensday 6th I was in Saints meeting at 7:00.  Saturday 9th I was in Councel.  Sunday 10th I was in prayer meeting at 10.  At 2:00 in Saints meeting.  At 6:00 I preach[ed] in the chapel in company with Elder Richard Jones.  Monday 11th in prayer meeting.  Saterday 16th I was in councel.  Sunday 17th I was in prayer meeting at 10.  At 2:00 I preach[ed] at Criswell Key.  At 6:00 at Carew Cross Roads in company with Richard Jones and James Crane. ___________ we got greatly anoyd by George Evans and some of his companions and wold not let the people hear.

 

17.       Monday 18th I was at prayer meeting.  Wednasday 20th I was in Saints meeting.  Sunday 24th I was in prayer meeting at 10:00.  At 2:00 at Cryswell Key at 2:00.  At 6:00 at Carew Cross Roads in company with James Bridge.  Monday 25th I was in prayer meeting.  Wednesday 27th I was in Saints meeting.  Sunday 31st I was at the opening of a house ______.  I was theare at 10:00 and at 2:00 and at 6:00.  Monday Augst 1st I was at preaching in the tavern[?] Monkton.  Wednesday 3rd I was at Saints meeting.  Saturday 6th I was in councel.  Sunday 7th I was in Saints meeting at 6:00.  I preacht in the chapel.

 

18.       Monday 8th I was in prayer meeting.  Wednesday 10th I was in Saints meeting.  Saturday 13th I was in councel.  Sunday 14th in Saints meeting at 10:00.  At 2:00 I preacht in Pater in company with Elder Thomas Evans and at 6:00 Monday 15th I was in prayer meeting.  Thursday 18th in Saints meeting.  Saturday 20th in Councel.  Sunday 21st in conference all day.  Monday 22nd in councel.  In prayer meeting at night.  Sunday 28th in Saints meeting at 10:00.  I read Orsen Pratt's epistle to the saints and every epistle that came.

 

19.       At 2:00 in the afternoon I preach[ed] in Pater in Company with Elder David Williams.  And at 6:00 Monday 29th in Saints meeting.  September 3rd I was in councel.  4th Sunday in Saints meeting at 2:00 in Pater.  At 6:00 in Pembroke.  Monday 5th in prayer meeting.  Wednesday 7th I was in Saints meeting.  Saturday 10th I was in in Councel.  Sunday 11th I was in Saints meeting at 10:00.  At 2:00 in Pater.  Pembroke at 6:00.  Monday 12th in prayer meeting.  Wednesday 14th in Saints meeting.  Saturday 17th in Councel.  Sunday 18th I was in Saints meeting at 10:00.  At 2:00 in Pater.  In Pembroke at 6:00.

23.       A record of my dead relatives & friends.  I, John Hopla, was born June 21st 1820 at Wollaston Cross in the Parish of Pwllchrochon, Pembrokeshire, South Wales.  I was the second son of John Hopla & Elizabeth Hopla.  My father was born at Grove in the Parish of St. Michel, Pembroke, in the year 1789, Aug 13th, all in South Wales.  This was written or copied from the page of introduction on acct. of being badly worn out.

 

24.       My father John Hopla was born August 13, 1789, at Grove in the Parish of Saints Michel, Pembroke.  Elizabeth Bateman, my mother, was born August 22, 1789.  Jane Bateman, born November 22, 1792, my mother's sister.  My grandmother's name was Anne Watkins.  She was married to John Bateman.  She was born January 8, 1759.  She died in the year 1845.  Buried in Pwllchrochon.  My grandfather John Bateman was born in the year 175_ and died in the year 1835 (July) and buried in Pwllchrochon Church yeard, County of Pembroke, South Wales.

27.       William Raymond died May 1855.  Elizabeth Raymond died May 1855.  Katherine Hopla was born in Llansshipen, Pembrokeshire, South Wales.  She was born in the year 1822 and died July 29th 1859.  Wife of John Hopla.

35.       South Wales Europe.  Mary Rankin died 1844 and was buried in the Parrish of Angle in the County of Pembrok.  Janes Ranking died _________.  Jane Green died May 26, 1860, age 38, was buried at Burnetope Cemetary, Leeds, England.  She died in full faith and in hopes of a glourious resurrection.

 

36.       John Hopla in South Wales, Europe.  Births of my own children.  First son, Benjamin was born November 14th, 1849, at Guilderoy in the Parish of Monkton.  He died on the 4th of December 1847 and was baried at Pwllchrochan Park.  Second Jane Hopla was born November 12, 1850, at Guilderoy near Hundleton in the Parish of Monkton.  Third John Hopla was born July 14, 1851, at Monkton in the parish of Monkton.  Fourth Sariah Hopla was born May 12 at 1:00 o-clock in the morning 1853 in the Terrace Monkton in the parish Monkton.  Sariah Hopla died February 27, 1854, aged 9 months and 15 days.

 

37.       She died of the convulsive fits.  She died in the same house as she was born in the parish of Monkton and was buried in Monkton Churchyeard by the Rev. Ess__ Holcomb.  My 5th child Lorenzo Hopla was born December 1, 1854, in the parrish of Monkton in part of Priory Terrace at half past 6 p.m.  Was blest in to the Church by Thomas Jeramy and John Price.  6th child Erastus Charles Hopla was born November 1, 1857, at half past 7:00 p.m. in 5th Street between North 6th and 7th Street in the city of Williams Long Island, North America

 

38.       And blest by William Lark, December 20, 1858.  7th child Joseph Edward Hopla was born June 29, 1859 at 5:00 o-clock morning on the bank of Platt River.  Died August 8, 1859.  Buried August 9 at Fort Laramie, America.  Harriet Green children John Scatchard, born April 29, 1851, 5 minutes past 11:00 in the morning, and died April 4, 1854.  Margaret Green born August 24, 1844.  Charlotte Ann Green born November 12, 1852.  She died August 6, 1853, at Leeds, England, Yorkshire.

 

39.       February 24, 1867, Elizabeth Hopla born in Spanish Fork, Utah.  Died the same day. 

 

40.       1853 Pembroke Branch Contributions.  John Hopla, Prresident, from Nov 19 until Feb 20 for books and all other expences is 10 pound, 18 shillings 7 pence.
