Phillip Roberts
Phillip Roberts was born in Pembroke shire, Wales in 1814, the first born of 5
children. He became a stonemason, as was his father, he married Maria Obray in
1843. The Obray family was members of the Mormon Church and on the 8th June
1844 Phillip was baptised.
Their first three children were born in
Wales, but by 1850 they had moved to Liverpool where their fourth child Celestial
was born in August. Two more children were born to them by 1855

By 1868 Phillip and Maria decided to
immigrate to Utah in the USA, where Maria's brothers Samuel and Thomas lived
with their families.
They left on the 4th June 1868 on the 'John Bright' and
arrived in New York Harbour on the 23rd. July 1868. Three of their children
travelled with them, Celestial, Phillip Jnr. and their daughter Maria. The two
older sons, Joseph John, and Hyrum Thomas followed later.
During the journey to Utah, Celestial met
James Vincent Knight, and the two were married shortly after arriving in Salt
Lake City. They moved to the more southern part of Utah. Phillip and Maria,
together with their son Phillip and daughter Maria, continued on to Cash County
in Northern Utah to meet up with Samuel and Thomas Lorenzo Obray.
In 1869 Joseph John Aubray Roberts and
his wife Jane and daughter Elizabeth travelled to Omaha, Nebraska, where
he worked on the bridge across the Missouri river between Omaha and Council
Bluffs. By 1871 his wife and Maria Aubray Roberts was born in Omaha. Jane and Elizabeth and baby Maria left and returned to
Liverpool, As yet it is not known what happened to Joseph John , but it is
possible that he followed his parents to Utah to begin a new life
Maria, died on the 15th November 1879 in
Hooper, Weber, Utah aged 65 years.
Phillip lived until he was 87 and died on
the 6th February 1901 in Ogden, Weber.
"Thurs. 4. [June 1868] -- The
packet ship John Bright sailed from Liverpool, England, with 722 Saints
(176 from Scandinavia), under the direction of James McGaw; the company arrived
at New York July 13th, and at Laramie City, on the Union Pacific Railroad, 573
miles west of Omaha, July 23rd."
