A Letter Written by David
Evans to Rachel (Evans) Rowland Harris
Dowlais July, 19, 1864
Dear Children
I received your letter dated nov. the 6 the 27 of dec.
and I was very glad to hear that W. Palmer arrived safe with the articles sent
to you I should have written sooner than this but I waited a long time
expecting a letter from Morgan's children to hear more account about Edward but
had none yet from them, but we had an account lately in another letter that he
is gone where Evan died, a place called Box Elder where Morgan's children
settled first and after that, I have been bad for near 3 months I have not work
anything this last 7 weeks I think to begin again this week -
But don't you think that I am in want off anything, I had a
bad cold last March and it did fix in my knee an inflammation but it is coming
on now very good again and I am now so well as ever thank God! I hope that you
are all well to and doing well to-
The times are very good at present here the Works are on
very well they had an advance in the wages here twice lately they do have to
much beer most of them now-
I have sent you a News paper in February with a small map of
America folded in it to the children if you had it and one after that and one
with this letter if you will have it to let you know how to do the war go on in
America at present. I have been at Hirwaun for the
last five weeks and I have a good living among my relation and plenty of
welcome and they are all well there and sends their best respects to you all,
please to give my best respect to W. Palmer and you all the same and I hope
that the children do make the best of their school if I could I would send them
more books but I hope when I shall send the next news after this I will fold
another map again.
After I'll begin to work again I am out of money at present
to buy one and pay the postage of them the letter and the paper.
Concerning the John Jones Anne's husband you can't believe
me about him he is off again after been in Jail and all and Anne and the
children in the Union except the eldest girl the second is going out this week
to service and Anne is doing well there now she is in office and likes her
place well.
Enquire of Mr Palmer about him and
perhaps that he can tell you about him to prove what I do write about him.
I must conclude now as I have no more at present; send a
letter back as soon as you can direct as before.
Your Affictianate
Father
David Evans
